An identity for the spotlight.
In May 2017 the Sumatran Orangutan Society staged an outdoor photography exhibition by Tower Bridge in London. With Dan Fleming Design, I developed its identity, exhibition design and promotional material.
the brief
The Sumatran Orangutan Society was staging an outdoor photography exhibition in London to raise awareness of Sumatra’s most endangered species. It needed an identity as compelling as its cause, and graphics that would hold a whole exhibition together on the street.
I worked with Dan Fleming Design to develop the identity, the exhibition design and the promotional material.
the identity
The wordmark is built from circles, with knocked-out counters and a circular “O” that echo the spotlight in the name. Four symbols, the orangutan, elephant, rhino and tiger, each sit in a spotlight of their own, and each species gets its own color.

exhibition graphics
The color palette helps visitors tell the species apart and brings some positive energy to a serious subject. A strong typographic hierarchy and a shared grid keep every panel recognizably part of one exhibition.
One panel color per species.
around the exhibition
The same system ran beyond the panels, onto a postcard that pointed visitors to ways to help orangutans, and a T-shirt for the Society to sell.
in london
The exhibition ran in May 2017 on the Thames path near Tower Bridge. Dan Fleming Design led the project; I worked with him on the identity, exhibition design and promotional material.
